Top 10 ISTQB Foundation Exam Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Mistake 1: Not Reading the Syllabus
The ISTQB syllabus is the single source of truth for the exam. Every question is based on it. It's free to download from istqb.org. Read it at least once before your exam.
Mistake 2: Confusing Testing Levels
Component testing, integration testing, system testing, and acceptance testing each have specific characteristics. Know the differences — this is a frequently tested topic.
Mistake 3: Mixing Up Review Types
Informal review, walkthrough, technical review, and inspection have distinct characteristics. Know who leads each type and what the key differences are.
Mistake 4: Boundary Value Analysis Errors
BVA is one of the most commonly tested techniques. Remember: for a range of 1-10, the boundary values are 0, 1, 10, and 11 (two-value BVA). Many candidates forget to test values just outside the boundaries.
Mistake 5: Forgetting the Seven Testing Principles
These come up repeatedly. The seven principles are: (1) Testing shows presence of defects, (2) Exhaustive testing is impossible, (3) Early testing saves time and money, (4) Defects cluster together, (5) Tests wear out (pesticide paradox), (6) Testing is context dependent, (7) Absence-of-errors fallacy.
Mistake 6: Poor Time Management
With 40 questions in 60 minutes, you have 90 seconds per question. If a question is taking too long, mark it and move on. Come back to difficult questions at the end.
Mistake 7: Overthinking Simple Questions
K1 (remember) questions are straightforward recall. Don't look for tricks where there are none. If a question asks for a definition, the answer is usually the textbook definition from the syllabus.
Mistake 8: Ignoring Distractors
In multiple-choice questions, wrong answers (distractors) are designed to be plausible. Read ALL options before selecting your answer. The "most correct" answer is what you're looking for.
Mistake 9: Not Practicing Enough
Reading the syllabus is necessary but not sufficient. You need to practice answering questions under exam-like conditions. Try our free practice questions to test your readiness.
Mistake 10: Cramming the Night Before
The ISTQB exam tests understanding, not memorization. Cramming doesn't work for K2 and K3 level questions. Spread your study over 2-3 weeks for best results.
